Mac vs Windows Keyboard Layouts: Key Differences Explained

Understand the differences between Command vs Windows keys, Option vs Alt, backspace vs delete, and how to test both on macOS and Windows.

Key Modifier Discrepancies

Switching between a PC and an Apple Mac often causes keystroke confusion due to differences in modifier placement and naming conventions:

  • Command (⌘) vs Windows (⊞): On Mac, the Command key sits directly adjacent to the spacebar. It handles core operating system shortcuts such as Cmd + C (Copy) and Cmd + V (Paste). On Windows, the Control (Ctrl) key handles these shortcuts, positioned at the far bottom-left corner.
  • Option (⌥) vs Alt: Mac keyboards feature Option keys that act as Alt keys when connected to Windows PCs, but also allow typing special typographic glyphs (⌥ + e for acute accents).
  • Control (⌃): macOS includes a Control key, but it is primarily used for terminal operations or secondary click emulation rather than application hotkeys.

Backspace vs Delete Behavior

On macOS, the key labeled Delete operates like the Windows Backspace key (erasing backward). To perform forward deletion on a Mac keyboard without a dedicated forward-delete key, users must press Fn + Delete.
